Downtown South Bend has a new dining establishment, the General Deli and Cafe. Located in the old General Store building on Jefferson Avenue across from Howard Park, the General serves up delicious sandwiches and espresso drinks.
My coworker Ashley and I visited the General for lunch yesterday, and we were impressed. There are six sandwiches currently on the menu, in addition to several side dishes and soups. There were also some yummy looking scones and bagels in the display case at the register. The interior is cute and eclectic. It is a great place to stop for lunch or to grab coffee with friends. One of the workers told me they were in the process of applying for a liquor license, and hope to serve alcohol at night in the future.
I enjoyed the Kibbler sandwich, which featured turkey, apple, onion, cheddar, swiss, arugula, garlic mayo, chipotle honey mustard on a bagel (I opted for bread). There were a lot of flavors going on, but they complemented each other extremely well. It was one of the best sandwiches I’ve had in a long time. Ashley had the pastrami sandwich, which she said was also really good.
The General is located at 609 East Jefferson on the East Bank Village side of downtown. Current hours are 7 am to 5 pm. Check it out!
